Top Home Remodeling Trends for 2016

For decades, homeowners have personalized their homes and redesigned spaces to fit their lifestyle by remodeling. This year, lots of homeowners are planning their building projects within the following home remodeling trends…

Open Kitchens

While we all love and need storage, more and more people want a cooking and dining space that is comfortable for entertaining, as well. These days, we’re not only spending more time in the kitchen than any other room of the house, it’s also the center point for guests to gather. Installing oversized islands with a bar-seating area, removing walls or barriers between the kitchen and eating area, and clever storage solutions to maximize space are common kitchen updates.

Spa Master Bathroom

The master suite should be a retreat; a place you go not only to sleep, but also to relax and rejuvenate. Lots of homeowners are renovating their master bathrooms into spa-like space. They are adding a second sink and either a jetted tub or double shower. A thoughtful redesign can make the master bath a place that is wonderful for relaxation, while also supporting the necessary function of the space and accommodating your storage needs.

Connecting Indoors & Outdoors

It can be tricky to successfully connect the indoors with the outside here in the Pacific Northwest, but a good flow is important. Adding French doors between the family room and back patio is one way to do this, to be opened during the summer for free-flow between the spaces. Even when they are closed in the winter, you can still see through to enjoy the greenery outside. People are also reimagining their outdoor spaces for entertaining, with thoughtful landscaping and gathering spots with a grill, fire pit, and/or outdoor fireplace.

Another fun new trend that pet owners are doing is adding pet amenity spaces, such as transforming the mudroom to add a dog wash/shower, storage and feeding area.
